In honor of those who came before me, I named my art business after my great grand-mother Eliza Jane Johnson. The inspiration for my work comes from personal experiences, family life, social struggles, political events, books read, and even my community environment.
A repeated theme for me is women rejoicing. Another theme is about the struggles men face in fulfilling their roles. A recent theme is politics. You will see symbolism in the mixed media work that suggest the human struggle between good and bad. I remain hopeful that systemic issues in the American culture and politics will be addressed.
I hope that you will see movement in my work. I love the call and response and layering format of African-American gospel music. I attempt to bring that movement to my art. I have been greatly influenced by the complex collage compositions of Romare Bearden, portraits in watercolor by Alex Powers and the soulful portraits of Dean Mitchell.
I hope something touches your heart as you view my work.
